Continental Properties has a wealth of talent inhabiting our apartment communities. Over the years we have developed some unique ways of recognizing that talent. Every quarter we name a "Red Umbrella Award" winner and every year we name a Leasing Professional of the Year. Leasing Professional of the Year is simple - the award is given to the person who generated the most leases during the prior year. The winner is awarded a weekend at a luxury hotel chosen because of its reputation for extraordinary customer service.

The Red Umbrella needs a bit of background. Several years ago Paul Seifert and Kim Grimm were traveling together looking for development sites. When they stopped for lunch it was pouring rain. Paul dropped Kim off near the entrance of a national restaurant chain and went to park. Being unprepared for the weather, he was expecting to get soaked. Much to his surprise, as he was getting out of the car he noticed a restaurant employee running out of the store toward his car with a huge red umbrella. That single person's thoughtfulness and ability to anticipate Paul's needs has made a lasting impression. Prior to that experience, he was ambivalent about the chain. That single experience completely changed his perspective, and the Red Umbrella Award was born.

This story is told to every new Springs team member, and repeated at every gathering of Springs managers as a reminder that every interaction we have with our residents and future residents has the potential to forever define what they perceive about us.
