What started as a whim has become a mission for the Pedal Pushers, and that mission has taken on a human face. We'd like to introduce you to Margaret (Midge) McWhirter.

Mrs. McWhirter is the mother of Bridget Cundiff, Property Manager of Springs at Waukee. Private First Class (PFC) McWhirter Served from 1944 – 1947 at MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station) Cherry Point in Havelock, North Carolina. She started as MP at the base, and at 5’2”, was a force to be reckoned with. She was then assigned as the communications installer on F4U Corsair Fighter Planes. These planes went on to the South Pacific, and were flown by Pappy Boyington’s Black Sheep Squadron. Though they didn't know each other at the time, Pappy’s mechanic, who worked on those same planes, would eventually become her husband, and Bridget's father. PFC McWhirter was awarded the Marine Corp War Time Medal of Honor, the Good Conduct Medal and WW2 Victory Medal. Bridget tells us, "As my mother makes sure that everyone knows, you can never say you 'were' a marine. You are always a marine!".

Cheers to PFC McWhirter on her 91st birthday. Thank you for your service!

Update on our progress: We now have enough pledged to send one veteran to Washington, and with Continental's match, we'll be sending two!
